How can i distribute my documentary film to channels in a profitable fashion?

I am in the process of directing a documentary and am having a hard time figuring out how to distribute my film to top documentary broadcasters such as, Discovery, National Geographic, History, and Travel channel, along with international markets as well. I was also wondering how it would work, and how do they decide on what films to choose and how much to pay.
